I don't believe Kobe when he says there was 'no negotiation', it defies business reality of the process which I imagine has been going on behind the scenes since before the season. The Lakers didn't just spin a wheel and throw out some ball park figure that high. Keep in mind his comments last season he would not take a paycut.
Sure mitch has an onus and it was silly to agree to the terms, however 'my hands are tied' comments from Kobe ignore the fact he/his people had all of the means and initiative in the world to suggest other alternatives where he still receives value whilst acting in the betterment of the team. For such a strong personality who is a straight shooter on almost everything including the championship rhetoric - this comes across as an extremely weak move by both sides.

Hmmm... from all that I've read, this was COMPLETELY generated by the Lakers. From what I understand, Kobe was planning on waiting until he was actually playing.
That said, I had hoped that even if they came to him with that number, he would have done the franchise a favor (a la Timmy). Not that the Lakers can't afford it, nor that Kobe doesn't deserve it... but the hold this puts on the amount of money LA can spend will pretty much hamstring the franchise for the immediate future.
